I am not an economist or a business person. I just like to shop and there are certain trends I encounter in retail that I find helpful to know when choosing where to shop, when to shop, and why.
One of the biggest scams in my humble opinion is Bed Bath and Beyond. They reel customers in like whoa with their coupons - which anyone can recognize and appreciate, but receiving 20% off an already overpriced item really is not much of a coup.
How many of these 20% off bad boys do you have in your car? Did you know you can also use them at Harmon Drug Stores? That is a much better deal.
I run into the same issue with Kohls -- although I loooove Kohls cash, I cannot deal with “fake sales” -- everything in there is always on sale, particularly the clothing; because when an item is priced ridiculously to begin with, their “sales” just bring them down to normal pricing, which for a cheapskate like me are still too high.
Once you thrift shop, it does radically affect your viewpoints regarding “new stuff” store pricing. When I can get an almost new dress shirt for $5, I find myself completely incapable of spending $48 for a new one. And this is not even a quantity/quality thing -- although I am a clothes horse -- most of the clothes I buy at thrift ARE name brands, and quality goods, so I consider that the proverbial “win-win” situation.
