The banality of painting

Ahh, painting. We’ve reached a point in our relationship where we can coexist, yes, but I will never love you. I love the changes you produce, but taping beforehand sucks, getting paint alllll over me sucks, and realizing I have to do another coat reallllllly sucks.

Which explains why the dining room was half primed for over 2 months. I had to muster the strength, the incredible fortitude to finish. To shoo the cats out of the room and thwart their entry into said room every time I went out into the hallway (if you did not know, anywhere you don’t want them to be is exactly where cats WANT to be). Anyway, I chose a color…a dark gray. And then I forgot about it for a while. And then, the game-changer occurred. I went to my in-laws new house, and they had painted the walls in their third floor guest room a gorgeous color of blue. It was so light, refreshing, and pretty that I immediately called my MIL and asked what it was. I went out to Ace that afternoon, and they copied the color into their own Ace Royal Paint (which I have to say, has wonderful coverage and a good price, and the staff is sooo very helpful to complete morons like me) and then, and then, and then….I painted it. I finally painted it. The color is Benjamin Moore’s “In Your Eyes” – and when you look at the paint in the can, or the dot on the top of the can, there is no way of telling the prettiness inside! Get a couple coats on the wall, and you will see.
Here are some photos of how I let my dining room look for about 4 months:

These really are quite shameful. But if you can relate to being in grad school, you know that there are times when shiz just ain't getting done - or for that matter, if you're a mom, if you have a job, etc, etc - all good reasons, at least in my book, for letting projects fester! How many days did I wish I could just call a painter to come in and finish it, lickety split?

In my program, we get about 2 weeks off...for the year. Yes, it sucks, but I had to use those 2 weeks well, and I did get the paint on the freaking wall. And I did order Easy Crown Molding offline, and I did get this rug from Home Decorators Collection...and I did wish I could afford a daybed.

Stay tuned for the afters. They include a dumpster-dove mirror, some ikea curtains that used to live in our bedroom, some loctite molding caulk (an interesting process, fo sho), and my blood, sweat, and tears. Well, I didn't cry, but I sure did sweat...a lot.
